What is the Domain Name System (DNS)?
DNS is short for Domain Name System. This is a necessary system for translating names on the internet; computers are named using IP addresses, but these are numbers and hard to remember, so web sites are given human-readable domain names such as "www.bt.com". Domain names are linked to IP addresses by a DNS server; when you type in "www.bt.com/broadband", the DNS computer will find the corresponding IP address so that you can be taken to the site.
